Pictet’s Water strategy: 25 years and still making a splash

Back in early 2000, at the height of the dotcom bubble, Pictet Asset Management had a different and novel idea -a strategy that focused on financing solutions to the global water challenge. With the launch of our Water strategy, we wanted to offer investors a way to access investment opportunities across all areas of the global water industry, with a particular focus on water supply, water technology and environmental services.

25 years on, the Water strategy still focuses on achieving capital appreciation for our clients through investments in innovative companies that develop water solutions utilizing pioneer technology and intelligent water management practices.

Our investment managers are able to identify these innovative companies as they are specialists in their fields and are responsible for both researching and constructing their own portfolios. Whats more, they draw on the expertise of a dedicated Advisory Board made up of industry leaders and academics. This helps them stay ahead of latest developments impacting the theme, such as new technologies or regulations.

Our investment approach is geared towards addressing global water challenges, encompassing both quality and quantity aspects. We selectively target companies that aim to enhance water quality, optimize efficiency, and expand household access to water services.

Water utilities companies typically operate in a regulated environment with a limited number of competitors, while generating consistent cash flows and enjoying low volatility. These characteristics tend to make them good compounders of the long-term.

Since the launch of the Water strategy, this same thematic investment process has been successfully used across a broad range of themes from Digital and Security to Health and Nutrition.
